Communities of collaborative, creative and transdisciplinary thinkers are necessary to initiate innovation in the sciences, the arts, and industry. Therefore, high-speed technologies are needed to create immersive digital environments that connect researchers and academics with counterparts around the world. [1] [weblink 1]

Aim

The Cisco Telepresence Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Enns investigate ways to improve virtual communication so that professors, grad students, business executives and others no longer need to travel to experience essential face-to-face interaction. [1]

Approach

A Telepresence room consists of three large high definition screens and cameras and a corporate boardroom (see picture) . The fully immersive multiscreen high-resolution audio/video environment can connect simultaneously with up to 12 similar sites around the world.

The technology is based on fibre optic signals, and runs on MRnet, the Manitoba Research Network; CANAIRE, the national fibre optic research network; and the LAMBDA RAIL network linking primary research universities in the United States.[1]
