Solution Summary
The envelio Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) digitizes and automates existing planning and operation procedures of distribution grid operators and clears the path for a comprehensive implementation of smart grids. By connecting a multitude of different data sources and using state-of-the-art optimization techniques and machine learning, it facilitates an easier integration of charging points for electric vehicles, electric heating or cooling appliances and distributed generation into future smart cities.

Problem
Urban areas consume more than 70 percent of the world’s energy and contribute 70 to 80 percent of energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Many city authorities around the world are making ambitious commitments to reduce their emissions over the coming decades by re-defining their energy mix and distribution system.
In this context, distribution grid operators are facing new challenges with regard to the grid integration of distributed energy resources and additional loads, e.g. EV charging points or cooling and heating appliances. Existing planning and operation procedures are neither applicable for handling the required amount of grid connection requests nor for guaranteeing a safe and reliable operation of the energy system.
Aim
The envelio Intelligent Grid Platform provides solutions for process automation and data analytics to enable the mass integration of distributed energy resources, charging points for electric vehicles, or new cooling and heating appliances into the power grid. This paves the way to smart cities with low carbon emissions and a reduced impact on the environment.

Approach
The envelio Intelligent Grid Platform is an award winning software framework based on five PhD theses. It transfers new findings, processes and methods (e.g. mathematical optimization, artificial intelligence and cloud computing) from R&D into solutions that support urban decision makers and distribution grid operators in their workflows with regard to power system planning and operation.
The IGP comprises three steps:
Establishing transparency
