The Winnipeg Public Library (WPL) is a public library system which is additionally delivering digital inclusion services. It offers programs and events for people of all ages, including programs for internet or computer basics, book clubs or roundtable discussions[1][2]
To use innovative technology to gain efficiencies, enhance services and ensure that it
remains relevant for all Winnipeggers in the digital age.[1]
A major goal of the library is to serve the needs of a diverse citizenry
and hence, fulfill its digital equity objectives.
The services target to support the Indigenous
community, people with disabilities, people facing literacy
challenges, and those learning English as a second
language. [1]
The public library provides free access to over 350 public computers that citizens can use to access the Internet. Free computer courses ranging from basic email and Internet search training to more advanced courses on social media and Microsoft Office software are available.
Digital databases are available to help newcomers and other English language learners learn English, improve literacy, learn about navigating the Canadian job market, and prepare for Canadian citizenship.
Indigenous language classes, dedicated programming space, and collections are provided in partnership with the Indigenous community.
Technological supports are provided for people with visual impairment. In partnership with VIRN (Visually Impaired Research Network), library staff are trained in how to download library material to devices used by the visually
impaired so that they can better serve this clientele. Free access to Zoom Text technology, talking terminals and online materials are provided for the visually impaired through CELA (Centre for Equitable Library Access) and NNELS (National Network for Equitable Library Services).
The Information and Virtual Services staff regularly promote their digital offerings to the community during street festivals, baseball games, theatre productions, and through outreach booths in downtown public parks and walkways. It also promotes itself through social media, and it has a large following on Facebook and Twitter.
